My suggested alternatives.

age 0-3:
- say no and remove from the situation
- distraction
- start using simple word.
age 3-10:
- talking and explaining: "讲道理"
- encourage and praise positve behaviour
- punish bad behaviour by taking previliege (favorite toy, TV or game time)
above 10:
- read Liangliang's mom's post. I don't have experience,but hitting definitely no no.
