We've got to be "politically correct"
In a legal and civilized society or country like America, we’ve got to talk "politically correct" and diplomacticaly. And I strongly believe that we should while we deserve the right of free speech, especially in this country, we, Chinese Americans as minority who might be very possible to be discriminated, belittled, or mistakenly stereotyped. We Chinese Americans are against any discrimination against us. At the same token, we should respect other nationalities and different people, especially those in need of help as well. In a multi-culture and multi-nationalities country like America, we talk “politically correct” means from our heart, not pretended that we should respect various different people from different countries and fields with different political views, cultures, life styles, etc, which are not bad but very good.
“Politically correct” asks us to think what we are talking about and talk about it correctly, dipomatically and properly though we’ve got to tell the truth. Some friends here misunderstand that “politically correct” is hypocritical or not honestly to express one’s opinion. That is not necessarily true. We don’t have to make others feel bad while we are trying to tell the truth. We don’t have to hurt others’ feelings while we are trying to be honest. Honesty is greatest character in this great legal and civilized America. Integrity is asked everywhere in America. It is American legal and social life requires us to tell the truth, nothing but the truth. “Politically correct” highly demands us to be well-educated and open-mind with great honesty and integrity.
For instance, no one in the whole world wants to be poor, but there are some people who are poor no mater in which country and in which society. It is not fair to say that these eople are poor because they are lazy though few of the poor might be lazy. There might be so many reasons, which we might even not be able to think of why they are poor. At the same time, we’ve got to realize that there are lazy persons in the world as well, even among those who are wealthy financially.
Another example, we can not say that a football or a basketball player in a collage does not study hard, especially those who would be drafted by NFL and NBA. They do study hard, and maybe extremely hard. Otherwise, they can not be super and go to NFL and NBA. They study as hard as anyone does if not even harder, but at different fields with different interest.
We’ve got not only to talk “politically correct” but also express ourselves diplomatically whatever we talk, whenever we talk, wherever we talk and whomever we talk to. It might be tiresome at the very beginning. Most of our friends here, especially those from Mainland China might not be used to it. However, we’ve got to learn and become used to it. It is good later on. It is good for us and it is good to others. We should have this great and wonderful habit and manner to talk “politically correct” and diplomatically.
We can never graduate from a school of "how to talk", but we have to learn and try to be a good student at it all the time.
