I totally understand you, because I have been through many different students and parents like that.

1) Don't get it personal. It is only your job and responsibility to teach and to communicate with kids and parents during school hours. Don't let your emotion, especially your mad-day emotion to affect your personal life.I know it is easy to say but hard to do. At least, give it a try.

2) It is better to communicate with parents through emails. It is particularly important after you have an emotional encounter with a kid like that. Usually, I pause for a few hours, talk to more experience teachers. Once I am calm again, I carefully pick my words and write a letter or an email to the parents. If the conversations turn to a wrong direction, I have all document to support and to protect me.

3) Talk to the kid privately. Usually I dismiss a class 2-3 minutes earlier and talk to the kid sincerely. It is very effective to start the conversation in a positive and encouarge tone.

4) Occasionally change the lesson plan to make it more fun. For instance, if students like to chat, let them chat, but only in CHINESE.

Class management is a always a challenge for me as well. There is no such thing as 师道尊严 in western societies. It is very hard for teachers like you and I, who were educated in Asia, to adjust to this different environment. I am more than happy to exchange ideas with you. Happy teaching!
