Bed and Bath Beyound has a list for college freshman.  Highly suggest a laser printer (best network ready and with copy and scanner) since college students alwayes finish their project in the last minutes at mid-night.  A personal printer is much more covenient.  Mac and PC are uaually half half in most colleges.  If they play gamess, PC is probably a better choice.  Many manufactures have discount for college students (education discount).  Also, you may count the cost into outside scholarship if the scholarship allows it and your total amount of financial aid and scholarship exceeds tuition.
