I applaud frugality, but

only to the extent that you can still maintain your and your family's decency and dignity in front of others. Alienations, whether cultural or psychological, are miserable, especially for our children who are faced with much more pressure to try to fit in. So whenever possible, go along with the norms, and don't put the chilren to the ridicule of others.
