I have been to Yellowstone twice. 1st time I flew to Jackson and rented a car there, 2nd time from Denvor. Denvor is a bit far but you can visit Rocky Mt. National Park and some other places if you have time. Jackson is outside of Grand Teton National Park which is right next to Yellowstone, but yes, rental is more expensive.
I have stayed in Frontier cabin last year and it had a small bathroom with showers only. About 15 years ago I stayed at Poineer cabin and it did not have in-room bath. But they have since remodeled.
