Normalization of grip strength depends on the clinical context. For predicting mortality and most health outcomes, absolute grip strength performs as well as or better than normalized values. However, for assessing metabolic health, identifying sarcopenia in individuals with extreme body size, or population-based research, normalization by height² (HGS/HT²) is recommended rather than body weight or BMI.
