If I miss a week or ten days due to illness, how much fitness will I lose and how do I return to my training plan?

First, you will lose very little fitness, even though you may feel terrible. You may have very low energy and maybe become mentally rattled that you aren’t able to stick with your plan. In many cases, this unplanned hiatus, also referred to as a “Deload Week” will allow your legs and areas of nagging injuries to recover. Once you feel like you can get moving, test yourself with a 30-minute brisk walk or light jog. Gauge how you feel during and after. If you feel good, add miles to your next run, and usually with 2-3 runs you are right back to your pre-illness status. Sometime, this may take 8-10 days so patience is key, but you will regain your fitness level quickly.
