In 1985, West German President Weizsäcker's speech on the occasion of the 40-year anniversary of the end of WWII squarely blamed Germany for WWII and its repercussions, including the German division. A few months later, he was the first German head of state to be invited to visit Israel.

In 1994, German President Roman Herzog apologized for the "inordinate suffering" the Nazis inflicted on Poland.

In 1998, the German parliament apologizes for bombing Guernica.
In 2000, German President Johannes Rau apologizes before the Israeli parliament for the Holocaust.

This year (2014), German President Gauck apologized for the massacre of Sant'Anna di Stazzema in Italy and apologized for Nazi War Crimes in Greece.
