I usually stays in Rockville area. Shady Grove is the last metro stop of red (?) line and many hotels have shuttles to the metro (Shady grove or rockville station, or anything else that is close).
Still pretty expensive this area but is much cheaper than places closer to DC. Yet Rockville is nice and safe for kids. If you want to stay comfortably(nice), you will need to stay at places at your upper end or $200/night. You get what you pay for.
