I remember reading a report in the Guardian by James Cameron when the Dalai Lama left Tibet. He described the gold, jewels, silks, embroideries, opulence and ostentatious wealth being carried out with the Dalai Lama and his palace retinue and compared it with the abject poverty and near starvation of the Tibetan peasants who's religious duty it was to work to keep the Dalai Lama and his courtiers in unimaginable luxury. It's always been a mystery to me why anyone would want to champion him.
