Mortgage rate hike up, should I wait??

I am interested in buying a house in a goog NY suburb area. Called several brokers the realtor gave me today, the lowest rate for jumbo 30 year was 7.75%. How come it is this high? They said the rate hiked up a lot this week, maybe it will go down soon?

I am afraid if the rate is so high, the housing market will go down even furthur.
