If you have lots of gains this year, you can buy the fund and get the dividend then sell the fund at loss; the short term loss to offset your short term gains (you'll need to pay income tax rate if no do anything); and you only pay the tax for dividends. For households with taxable income less than $400k, the qualified dividend tax rate is 15%.
