Fish - water?

We inheritated a fish from the previous owner in a small fish tank.

Can we just use tap water?  I read it in the internet that I need to leave out for some time so that the clorine won't kinn the fish.

Anyone has experience, please give me some advice on how to raise a fish

It is a life, and I want to make sure it lives well ....
