you are right. it's not for saving purpose. however, you can invest the extra money yourself. (whole life cost more than term life)

bottom line, you should have some sort of life insurance for your kid, either term life or whole life.

if you know how to invest, buy 10~20 year term life. if not, buy the whole life.
