may I transfer stocks into IRA from a normal stock account?

I have a normal stock trade account now and want to open a IRA account with the same trader (scottrade). I know I can trade stocks with this IRA account, but I do not know could I transfer the stocks I hold into the IRA as contribute. Thank you.
