I think that there are two area misunderstood.

It's much better, but still missed the last sentence. But my understanding is that:

1. may get short changed in their golden years.

  golden years means retirement. short changed -- no money.

2. It’s no shock

  it's not surprise

Also, settle down means at age of having family.

AI has a long way to go.
