There are probably more RE related companies that are owned by BRK's subsidiaries. 

WB simply chose not to take on the "dirty" job directly -- owning properties outright, dealing with obnoxious tenants etc.  He chose to own a business that deals with the hassle.  Anyway, he once owned a farm when he was still in high school.
