Because it is hard to prove amount of damage.  US court don't issue court order for apologies.  You have to have damage.   So in a formal court it is really not worth it. 

However, you might include a libel/defamation claim in your small claim filing, just to beef up your negotiation position.  You won't win but you don't lose anything, small claim is very informal.
