You can open multiple IRAs, but the total contribution (combined) can not pass $5000 for 08 and 09.

You don't need to open multiple IRAs if you want to buy multiple mutual funds, one IRA is enough. You can buy as many funds as you want. But vanguard funds usually has $3000 min investment requirement. Fidelity funds min requirement seems lower. You have to check the funds you want to buy (min requirement is quite different).
