If somebody promised you 12% gurantted return, then he is cheating.

401k has several advantages:
1. Tax Defer.
2. Company match.
3. Good investment strategy, it includes
(a)invest in index fund to avoid "stock picking" risk.
(b)dollar cost averaging to avoid "timing market" risk.
