for a family of two, if you max out tax-sheltered contribution, then]

1. $17,500*2 for 401K=35,000

2. Roth or Traditiona IRA = $5,500*2 = 11,000 (accelerated contribution allowed for 50+);

that is $46,000 sheltered from tax, and we are not even talking about:

1. employer contribution;

2. 529;

3. life insurance,  etc.

of course you need the income to qualify.
