The contract says subject to lender approval

Your post never said lender approved, only that lender was going to approve. At this point, lender apparently didn't approve and put the house to auction. You have no recourse because they can get out of contract by themselves.

Last short sale/auction when you signed the release form, did the bank approved the short sale?
