Frenchman's Creek (1998), novel by Dame Daphne du Maurer -- Daphne du Maurier was obsessed with the past. She intensively researched the lives of Francis and Anthony Bacon, the history of Cornwall, the Regency period. Such a painful love story full of understanding and sacrifices. But I love the ending and the whole story.
Great movie, courageous lady, understanding husband, determined charming young French and that legend love connection behind.Every thing that our hearts choices never happened to be it's betterhalf..sad but true.you've to give up in the end.

As the grand niece of Geraldine Fitzgerald, a hollywood beauty and fine actor (Dark Victory) from the 1940's, Tara Fitzgerald (Lady Donna St. Columb) and Anthony Delon (his famous father, French actor Alain Delon), well cast together in interpretation! The dialogue in some parts is like poetry set to music. Delon would be a difficult man to forget and so, the heart of the husband. Russell Brand is brilliant as the french pirate, his best performance ever. Delon is still captivating along with James Fleet's supporting role.
This film of Frenchman's Creek retains only a vague outline of Du Maurier's original. Which is not to say it's not worth watching - just don't expect the novel's same dreamy sequences. So many of the scenes have been changed as to make it unrecognisable in places. Religions prejudices (Catholic vs Protestants) is not in the novel - this film has been set several years later under different kings. The novel expresses Dona's wish to break free - to taste the freedom that the men had and her ultimate sacrifice in favour of her children over love (another key diff between film and novel). Also the novel is set in a hot Cornish summer - an important factor in the story. Having said all that, I do think the film's ending is more believable than the novel. Thank you for sharing it.
this 1998 version almost as much as the original 1944 version (the version starring Joan Fontaine and Arturo deCordova). Such a great storyline. Daphne Du Maurier was a genius. Watching a Wonderful and clearly speaking lady, Tara Fitszgerald´s brilliant acting, as well as the characterisation of the male roles in this movie, was totally impressive to me.
the theme tune running through this is Bee Gees 'First of May' song. ''When we were small and Christmas trees were tall...'' All these years I wondered and then it came to me in a flash!

I read the book by Daphne du Maurer long ago...and have always thought this adaptation to be superior; particularly like Tara Reid's interpretation. She is perfect in the role.
