many people waiting tables thru their college years

There is nothing wrong with the job.

Many professional waiters/waitresses make decent living.

When I graduated from college, a classmate said he would take a big pay-cut for his first "career" job in marketing. He was headwaiter in a mid-range restaurant, making close to 40K a year (that was in 1989). His marketing job started at 24K a year.
