If you are going to Prudhoe Bay, you'll definitely need an SUV - it's snowing there today! About 60 miles of the 90 mile McCarthy Road into Wrangell is unpaved. You can only drive 14 miles into Denali and to go further you have to take the park shuttle, which closes for the season sometime in September.
2 problems you might run into camping in AK in Sept:
1. it will be too cold for camping (many places in the mountains have already dropped below zero)
2. many services (camp grounds, shops in remote areas, B & Bs, Charter services such as rafting, fishing, etc) will be closed for the season and they usually close sometime in September or earlier.
Close to Denali, there is a campground with tent camps that I really liked. You only need to bring your own bedding and they provide a canvas tent.
