Notable Incidents in Mexico City
Carbon Monoxide Poisonings (2022 and 2024): In separate incidents, American tourists have been found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in vacation rentals. Three Americans died in an Airbnb in November 2022, and a Texas couple was found dead in another Airbnb in late 2024, prompting lawsuits from the families against the rental company, the Department of Justice, and the FBI for a perceived lack of action.
Stray Bullet Incident (2018): An American tourist, Tatiana Mirutenko, was killed by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting while leaving a restaurant in the upscale Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood. The shooting was a targeted attack on another individual, and Mirutenko was an accidental victim.
Targeted Killings (Various): While not always tourists, other violent incidents in tourist-frequented areas include a Colombian man killed in the trendy La Condesa neighborhood in 2025 by gunmen on a motorcycle. In 2018, gunmen dressed as mariachi musicians killed several people in Plaza Garibaldi, a major tourist attraction. These events, some believed to be targeted, have raised concerns about the impact on the city's image as a safe enclave.
