Several American friends top diving places incl Indonesia.
SIL and her husband went to Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines specifically for SCUBA diving. They went to Samui and other Thai islands at least 3 times, Philippines small island groups 2 times. and that were even during the time there were pirates around and the areas were under Travel Advisory from US State Dept.
I dont have that much love. When in Asia these places aint difficult to reach. So yeah, I did those places too but primarily for SCUBA Diving. Still have a full set of SCUBA gear at home (skin, BCD, mouth piece etc) but the last dive is 7 or 8 years ago by now.
If you can find the archives of the magazine Skin Diver, you would see the top places around the world for the sport. Note - Skin diving usually does not go very deep (no SCUBA), therefore also quite suitable for snorkeling.
