Besides, in Europe you do can travel without cash, except for some small changes for using toilets that have not installed card payment devices yet. Our last 3 trips to London we did not use a single britich penny, all card payments incl the tap on tap off public transports from bus to metro to train.
My 7 weeks trip that incl both London, Malta, Italy, 3 countries in Middle East, I only used 20 euro in total, about US$50 worth in Oman currency which in reality I had to use left over of US$30 to pay hotel bill, in order to use it with the bal settled by CC. In Dubai the same thing, this time I only exchanged US$30 and wound up using $25 again for hotel bill with remaining paid by CC. In Qatar I decided to go Cashless in local currency, and worked out perfectly for my 3 day 2 nights stay - both metro and taxi can be paid by CC. Of course restaurants / hotel bills all can be paid by CC.
