My biggest impression on our visit was the sign hung outside a shop on the famous bridge - informing customers they are out on holiday (British version of vacation) for a month. Please come back in September.
This was in the height of tourist season, and the shopkeeper couldn't care less - they went for their own holiday too. :)
Lake District - I think we went there too late - should have gone there decades ago. We heard lots of good things about it decades ago from our friends in England, but we never visited it. So we decided to finally go last Sept. Quite disappointed - all the small towns were extremely commercial - bed and breakfast occupied all the spots along the river and lake - hardly anywhere one can find any quiet spot - everywhere you turn, there were tourists and tourist traps. A sketched, very crude map sells for 3 GBP by the local tourism office ... We had hard time to picture the beauty our friends described - but of course what they described probably are all lost after 10-15 years.
In fact, even London is so so overcrowded these days and so bloodily expensive... It is sad some places you cannot return if you dont want to shatter the memory.
