Take Switzerland, it has 3 languages, German, French and Italian.

Belgium has Flemish, which is similar to German but not exactly.

Dutch is very "foreign", luckily most everyone speaks English (because the Queen went to UK for shelter during WWII, so English is widely taught in school after she returned).

English also is passable in Scandinavia.

A good way is to get an electronic travel dictionary that also has useful phrases pre-stored. We used it frequently last time we traveled to Spain.
