Once you realize no matter how hard you work, you will still

not be able to have "enough" when comparing with those who are better off than you...

The old Chinese saying of "知足常樂"    is very phylosophical. 

All you need is the "enough" that works for you for a comfort level that you accept.  Once you see through this,  it is then much easy to set yourself free early. 

Since you live in Canada,  a big chunk of the burden taking early retirement is off due to the Canadian health care system.

A girl friend of mine took an early retirement from California's education system a few years ago.  That was after she took a pay cut to work on a much less stressful job for 2 years to gradually get in the retirement mode.  California education system already has one of the best health care plan in the nation - she was able to stay on the same health insurance without paying extra until 61.  There will be 4 years gap between this and the US Medicare.   She is dual nationality - US and Canada.   Originally she considers moving back to Canada for that 4 years, but lately she is researching the health care insurance in Europe, where she could move to and still be able to afford health care needs.  According to her,  Portugal has one of the best health care coverage that a foreigner could get.   Mexico, too, is on the short list.  In fact since decades ago,   there  is several Canadian and American retirees concentrations in Mexico,  such as Guadalajara.   The health care cost in Mexico is very cheap,  while the quality is quite good for the normal needs, even incl small procedures / hospitalization.
