Use your BRAIN, be observent, adjust the speed and approach based on current conditions (road, traffic, weather, car itself, etc)

Being able to process information quickly - or in other words, have "road sense", by far is the best defense in driving, long or short distance, travelling or city driving. Some people pick up the skill naturally some require more time. However, it is something can be achieve if one really tries hard and will be benefited from it for the whole life.
