That's exactly the point. If you are to plot a graph of time vs. the probability of physical failure (say hard disk, in this case), the graph would be like a bath tub. Most problems, if any, are surfaced within the first few months. Once past that phase, the product is usually stable, till when it's close to the end of life, at which point the probability climbs up again.

I didn't say "you" bought the extended warranty. I was referring to general consumers. Few people out there know how to beat them at their own game like you do. As you said, the reason they do this is because it's free money!

Now if you come to think of it, that actually supports the claim that chances of hard disk physical failure is slim.
