For example, Sacremento River has a record run in 2005. There mainly is Chinook (King Salmon). Chinook does not turn as bright red as Sockeye does.
In fact, because of many species in Sacremento River, the spawning occurs year-round.
We saw one in Ketchikan, Alaska, in early Sept last year. Katchikan is an island in South East Alaska - a cruiseship port of call and only be reached by boat or by float planes. It is also the First city of Alaska.
Those fishes were already gathering going upstream from the inlet but they stopped swimming further up, just gathering. The staff of nearby hatchery told us the fishes were waiting for a couple more weeks then they would start their spawning. Meanwhile, they were just hovering in the stream. They didn't turn red at all at the time. Those were Silver Salmon, the run started from Sept thru the first week of October.
