Many Gringos have bought retirement homes along Costa Rica coastal towns. The trend started over a decade ago.

Another very popular retirement place for Canadians/Americans is Guadalajara, Mexico - near the largest inland lake of Mexico. We even know a Chinese whose parents bought a home there.
