tried route 1 north all the way north

and you will see American countryside is not always pretty and well-maintained.  Lots of dilapidated farm houses and broken tractors.  And winter time is so desolate, no one wants to stay (but I did).  No one here means birds, fish, merchants, and vacationers like you.
