Another question about GC R2R,

Is a hiking pole really necessary?  We don't plan to bring one.  We try to carry as little staff as possible.  One more question - what do they have in the phantom ranch general store?  Can we get some drinks like Gatorade, soda pops there? What about fruit?  
We have already reserved dinners and breakfasts at the phantom range.
