question: do I really need to call the airline for seat selectio

I booked 2 tickets using kayak.com on SAS, flying from Stavanger, Norway to Stockholm, Sweden later this month. The booking is actually processed by Travelocity. Its confirmation email gives me the ticket numbers, and said I need to call the airline for seat selection. Do I really need to? Or that is just a standard reply by Travelocity.
