WRONG - many times it is hidden in the xchange rate

Many people have done real time comparison on the exchange rate convertion - if you can get close to within 1% on your withdrawal, then the bank is already considered being "honest".

For Canada, at least in Vancouver, the best rate you might get actually is those xchange places operated by Chinese (Money laundering? your guess is as good as mine)

I did one withdrawal with my Wachovia ATM card (I forgot to use my BofA card to get money and was running out of cash before buying a dinner for bunch of relatives, at a cash only place, so I did the withdrawal at HSBC machine). My Wachovia account allows 2 free International withdrawals per cycle, so there is no fee. But the exchange rate is 2% worse than the real time rate. (I made transactions within 12 hours timeframe and can compare the rate on different statements).
