回复:More on Bear/wildlife Safety- do NOT run

In WXC, I have always seen some posts from some most experienced trekkers from northwest, Wunderlust is certainly one of them.

I like to add a few tips. We should treat grizzlies and black bears a little bit differently:

(1) If you encounter a grizzly bear, as Wunderlust said, don't turn around and run, lower you head to avoid eye contact, walk sideway very slowly. There is not way you can fight against the 3~400-pound grizzly, so, if the bear charges and it's too close to avoid, play dead is the only way to protect yourself.

(2) If you encounter a black bear, like Wunderlust said, extend you arm to look bigger while you should still low you head to avoid eye contact, if the black bear charges and you are too close to escape, fight back is the only way out. Play dead will NOT help.

(3) Bear spray may ONLY be used as an weapon if the bear charges and you are too close to escape. Bear bell, shaking some rocks in the empty coke can, or singing along the trail in the bear country, are much better options to let bears know you are near and avoid surprises.
