You can visit Yellowstone in Aug. Sep. is too cold sometime it may snow.

Suggest you to stay in Grand Teton 1 (or 2 nights), 2 nights in Old failthful Inn (be careful their low price room is too old to stay, sometime there is mice visit in the night), 2 nights in Lake Yellowstone.

The first one or two days you can stay in Grand Teton,but you must book the hotel earlier and it is also a little expensive.

Oldfaithful is a hot place convenient to anywhere so difficult to book room in Oldfaithful Inn but others are ok.

Lake Yellowstone hotel is alos beautiful and tasteful, close to Canyon.It's very convenient to see the animals like Bison driving from Lake Yellowstone to Canyon.

Mammoth hot spring hotel is a little new, better condition at fair price but the location is a little too far.

Canyon lodge is in the center of Yellowstone, it's big and economic so a lot of tour bus park there, but the condition is not as good.

Strong you spend more time in Yellowstone Canyon.

When leaving yellowstone you can drive to SLC via west entrance to HW15. You can also spend 1 night in Salt Lake City to visit North Temple.

Tips to book lodge in Yellowstone: Keeping call the reservation center if difficult to find the room you want. Online reservation doesn't provide all the update information.
