What you suggested was my original plan but without Rocky Mtn. It has less number of stops but total drving is not much of difference.

To be honest, I started planing last year. It has been a very difficult choice. But when I look at the map, I feel it's most efficient to split in 4 trips to cover the west: (1) Upper area: Glacier, Calgary, Seattle & Vancouver (2) Lower area: New Mexico, Lower Arizona & Lower California (3) The center area: Utah & WY (4) Pacific coast & Yosemite area.

As far as enjoyable is concerned, (Thanks for the reminding), that will be the bottom line for the trip.
