We had Fish & Chips one time in highlands Scotland, it seems as or even more popular in Scotland. Kids love it, as long as the fishes are fresh, I am okay with it too. The price are relatively cheaper since it is fast food, and really we don't have to touch the chips. 

Your England trip reminded me of our Scotland trip 2 years ago. I will have to write about it before the memory fade away.
