Do I need to rent a car in San Francisco?

I will attend a meeting From April 1-5 in San Francisco , I never have been to this city, if I live in the hotel which is closed to the Moscone convention center, do I need to rent a car to tour all the attractive place around SF or I can just take metro, bus instead? Any good place to go? Thanks a lot!
