I am also planning to go to CanCun or Mexico City this X'mas. My time is pretty fixed, between X'mas and New Year. My friends who have been to CanCun and Mexico City told me that CanCun is short in history and very westernized. To see real Mexico, Mexico City area is much better for local culture and architecture. Both areas have a lot Maya sites. If white sand beach can be skipped, Mexico City would be a better choice.
