Both are very good for family visit. We went to both area in a 5 day trip.

It is good to take boat tour in thousands island. Then hop on and off on several islands. It will take you about one day.

For finger lake area,there are Corning glass museum, Watkins Glen state park (there is a small beautiful gorge in the park) and other several state parks around for you to visit.
