When we visited Disney World for the last few times, we chose to rent a single family house. The houses typically were less than 15 min drive from Disney World. We found a lot of houses for rent on internet, for example, homeaway.com
Pro: four or five bedrooms, a lot of space for my kids or parents, a well-equipped kitchen, a heated swimming pool/spa (imaging Mom and Dad relaxing in the spa after kids go to bed...), a game room, and a feeling of home; freedom to get to favorite restaurants and shopping (Orlando has a lot of shopping options)
Con: car rental, driving, and parking at the park.
Cost: a house rental does not cost more than a nice hotel/resort, not mention that we got more space and privacy. We rented a five-bedroom house (2200 sqft) for three nights over the past Thanksgiving. The total cost (including cleaning fee, and pool heating) was $350. A great deal, indeed.
