We are going to Alaska again this Sept. However this time we will take a South Bound cruise from Whittier to Vancouver, visiting College Fjord, Glacier Bay National Park, Skaway, Juneau, Kitchken.
Basically it is the southern part of Alaska - imho, this part of Alaska is more beautiful than the northern part towards Denali. The Kenai Peninsula is also very beautiful.
Anyway, our cruise is on Island Princess. We found a great bargain for an inside cabin, $550 per person including port charges and taxes. The extra would be $10 per day per person for gratuity. (we dont count incidentals such as drinks, spa services, purchases, etc etc) $10x7 = $70 per person.
We also will rent a car at Skaway to drive to Whitehorse, Yukon. Already reserved one with Avis for $50 (no insurance, credit card will cover it). Gas would be about $25. Total is $75/2 = $38 or $40 per person.
If we do the same thing in Juneau, would cost us slightly less due to short distance drive, so it would be $30 per person.
So far, the items add up to $690 per person before Airfare.
However, All Foods are paid for. You can eat yourself silly on a cruise ship. Food quality on Princess I would rate it good, not gourmet, comparable or better than Olive Garden for example. There is also nightly entertainment.
In a way, a cruise to Alaska is actually cheapter than do a landtrip, since we already did the must do Denali.
Again we are using frequent flyer award. Air if it is arranged by cruiseline for this open jaw ticket, fly in ANC, fly out YVR, is about $600 from FLL. I imagine from SFO would be at least $100 cheaper.
So there you have it, $1200 to $1300 per person by cruise, INCLUDING ALL FOODS (all you can eat 24/7 foods shall we say ?)
Oh, I am debating whether I want to do a snorkeling excursion at Kitchken - sounds crazy isn't it ? the excursion is just under $100 I think.
