Question: Air ticket reservation for Shengen Visa

I am think of going to France Consulate for visa, and remember some posts saying to get a air ticket reservation only not purchasing the ticket. I did check a few airline website, they all require purchase ticket immediately or within 1 or 2 days. It is hard to find a airline willing to issue reservation only. Can anyone let me know your experience of booking reservation for visa purpose? which airline I shall go to?
